The 2010 Simple Living Book Club
book club
classic books by ali edwards
In late 2008, when we created the book club, I had no idea that I would sign a book writing contract with a publisher in early 2009, and in that contract would be a tight writing deadline with my manuscript due at the year’s end.....

Sir, For those who don't have an "old" copy of the Boy Scout Handbook, the 1911 edition is available from Project Gutenberg in a variety of electronic formats. Also, they have the Girl Scout Handbook, 1920 edition. There is some overlap with the Boy Scouts handbook, but also much...

There is a discussion on the "Lifeboat Strategy" book. I have bought this book and it is pretty good. The discussion is around 35 minutes and touches on the generalities of offshoring yourself. The site "International Man" is worth reading everyday if you are interested in this type of stuff.

Dear James: I recently purchased a book that may be of interest to my fellow SurvivalBlog readers: Hanna Diamond's book Fleeing Hitler: France 1940. This book is currently being remaindered at the Canadian Internet bookseller Chapters.ca. The jacket copy states: "In June 1940, as Hitler's armies advanced on Paris,...

Expecting that someday soon the Internet as we know it will cease to exist, I have been slowly but surely amassing my own survival library. Once they finally pull the plug we will only have the personal knowledge gained and our reference materials to guide us through the coming "dark ages." Today, I can go online, conduct a google search and get nearly any question I have answered. Tomorrow, I may have to consult those dusty tomes on my book shelf or improvise.

Nuclear War Preparedness
" ... First, dispel the notions that the world will immediately come to an end. Google "Creason Kearney's Surviving Nuclear War". This book was written by a researcher at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility in Knoxville, TN. Kearney spent years researching the outcome of nuclear conflict during the Cold War and the affects on society. Based upon his research Kearney made several proposals, many of them small protection steps normal Americans could do which he tested, for preparing and surviving a nuclear attack on the United States.
When this report was released in the 1980's, it was promptly attacked and debunked by the media and others with little if any knowledge of nuclear technology or the effects of radiation. Rather, it was tossed out in favor of the nuclear freeze movement of the time. Too bad. The information, while dated, is still relevant.
Don't forget, when it was written, the U.S. was staring down the barrel of the Soviet Union which was targeting thousands of multi-megaton weapons at nearly all of our cities and military installations. The situation today, while dangerous, does not have as grave of outcome as then.
Now, take a visit to KI4U. Read every link on the first page. Believe me, it will open your eyes and leave you in a better prepared state of mind. ... "

BOOK AND MOVIE REVIEW
Usually on holidays when I don’t work I don’t post any articles. However, I know that without my guidance you are cast out upon a dark and stormy sea and I wouldn’t want to subject you to that. Plus, I had to come in for a few hours for food pick ups anyway. So I threw this together on Sunday and will pre-post it for publication at the usual time. I know, please don’t thank me all at once. I cast my pearls before you with only the noblest motivations.

Malevil by Robert Merle

From Wikipedia.....
Plot summary
The story's events take place in rural France in the late twentieth century. The protagonist is Emanuel Comte, former school director, now turned farmer and landowner. He is also an owner of a tourist attraction - an old castle called Malevil after the nearby village. Comte is highly motivated, well-respected person with a talent for diplomacy and leadership.
By chance, Emanuel and several of his friends find themselves in the wine cellar of the castle during the unexpected outbreak of nuclear war. The survivors find their surroundings reduced to ashes and rubble. Together under the leadership of Emanuel they start to rebuild. They later discover that other people and animals have survived in nearby farmsteads and villages. Nature begins anew and an agrarian society starts to reform. From time to time more survivors show up, some bringing death and destruction with them.
One of the main challenges of the slowly emerging society is to fend off the threat of a new theocratic dictatorship that has taken over a neighboring village with the assistance of a marauding gang. Emanuel dies prematurely as the new society whose foundation he has helped to create begins to thrive.
