I recently read a book called "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen. This author is highly credentialed and has published more than forty books, at least two of which are best-sellers. That being said, I wasn't overly impressed in the beginning from an editor's point of view. The meat of the story was okay, but the delivery was lacking in structure and format. There were whole multi-line paragraphs comprised of a single sentence ...talk about a run-on. And being a run-on was rarely the only problem. The mega-sentence was usually fraught with multiple mixed tenses and conflicting conjugations. Ugh! I spent too many years as a technical writer and editor myself not to notice them, but I grew numb to them as I got into the story. Anyway, by the time I finished the book, I found that I had a much bigger bone on contention with the author.....

Has anyone out there read "Starving the Monkeys" - fight back smarter, by Tom Baugh?
I am perusing it at present and have mixed feelings. I am not reading it start to finish, that comes later.
I understand his basic premise, and some of his statigies, but I also take great pause at some of his "suggestions."
So I am just wondering what others think. I know the book is only beginning to make the rounds, but if you have read it, please feel free to give me your feedback.

This book was written by a researcher at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Facility in Knoxville, TN. Kearney spent years researching the outcome of nuclear conflict during the Cold War and the affects on society. Based upon his research Kearney made several proposals, many of them small protection steps normal Americans could do which he tested, for preparing and surviving a nuclear attack on the United States.

When this report was released in the 1980's, it was promptly attacked and debunked by the media and others with little if any knowledge of nuclear technology or the effects of radiation. Rather, it was tossed out in favor of the nuclear freeze movement of the time. Too bad. The information, while dated, is still relevant.

Don't forget, when it was written, the U.S. was staring down the barrel of the Soviet Union which was targeting thousands of multi-megaton weapons at nearly all of our cities and military installations. The situation today, while dangerous, does not have as grave of outcome as then.

Plot summary

The story's events take place in rural France in the late twentieth century. The protagonist is Emanuel Comte, former school director, now turned farmer and landowner. He is also an owner of a tourist attraction - an old castle called Malevil after the nearby village. Comte is highly motivated, well-respected person with a talent for diplomacy and leadership.

By chance, Emanuel and several of his friends find themselves in the wine cellar of the castle during the unexpected outbreak of nuclear war. The survivors find their surroundings reduced to ashes and rubble. Together under the leadership of Emanuel they start to rebuild. They later discover that other people and animals have survived in nearby farmsteads and villages. Nature begins anew and an agrarian society starts to reform. From time to time more survivors show up, some bringing death and destruction with them.

One of the main challenges of the slowly emerging society is to fend off the threat of a new theocratic dictatorship that has taken over a neighboring village with the assistance of a marauding gang. Emanuel dies prematurely as the new society whose foundation he has helped to create begins to thrive.

Last year I read John M. Barry's "The Great Influenza", a powerful narrative of the circumstances and outcomes of the 1918 flu that killed 50 million people. I recommend the book highly.

I have no opinion on the Mexican swine flu other than to say that if it is something bad, or worse, it could not come at a more inconvenient time for politics, the economy, or the markets.
